Surgery Center Cedar Rapids is proud to announce the successful completion of the first Genio® system procedure in the state of Iowa and the Midwest. Performed by Dr. Thomas Heineman, Physicians’ Clinic of Iowa ENT surgeon, these landmark cases mark a significant advancement in the treatment of moderate-to-severe obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), particularly for patients who cannot tolerate or do not benefit from standard therapies like CPAP.
The Genio system, recently approved for use in the United States, offers a unique approach to OSA by stimulating the nerves to maintain an open airway during sleep. It is also the only device clinically proven to be effective while users are sleeping on their backs—where OSA symptoms are often most severe.
The device features a battery-free implant that is placed through a single incision in an outpatient setting and is powered by a small external wearable. Patients benefit from a system that is upgradable and safe for most full body MRI scans.
Moderate-to-severe OSA impacts nearly half a billion people globally and has been linked to serious health conditions, including cardiovascular disease and cognitive decline. By improving oxygen flow and reducing nighttime awakenings—especially in the challenging supine position—the Genio device has the potential to significantly enhance patients’ quality of life.
The introduction of Genio at Surgery Center Cedar Rapids reflects the organization’s dedication to expanding treatment options and improving outcomes for patients suffering from sleep-related breathing disorders.
